Oven Glove "Kitchen"
Oven Glove "Kitchen"
Enhancing classical painting techniques with elements of pop art, kitsch, and camp, Katrin Valgemäe’s subtly grotesque pinup product series takes inspiration from the media’s exaggerated self-centeredness, revealing various layers with intriguing narratives upon closer examination.
The idea for this painting came from the artists own life. “It is my allegorical self-portrait. The kitchen is the epicentre of my home. It’s a place where I spend most of my time. Whether it is caring for my small child, cooking, or doing other chores, everything happens in the kitchen. I also paint in the kitchen. Additionally, there is a hint of influence from Richard Hamilton, from his (1956) collage “Just what is it that makes today’s homes so different, so appealing?” I tried to capture the satire of my “well” organised everyday life, the parodical stretch of the overwhelming illusion – always trying to be everything to everybody and nothing less.”
